Climate change is having an impact on across the world, and urgent action needs to be taken! CEA Consulting have put forward a thorough examination of ocean alkalinity enhancement, raising awareness about this process and its ability to remove atmospheric carbon dioxide.
The Challenge
Our whiteboard animation for CEA Consulting needed to raise awareness about the process of ocean alkalinity enhancement, talking to a wide audience with varying degrees of knowledge about the process. CEA Consulting’s message was complex, involving key scientific information and details that needed to be made accessible. For our creative team the challenge was to translate this complex narrative into visual language which communicated the message at each stage.
The animation
CEA Consulting’s message involved complex scientific processes, the representation of data and a wider questioning of ocean alkalinity enhancement’s costs and impacts. Our visuals had to add further explanation to a professional and reflective voiceover. This happened within a rich visual world created by detailed illustration, visual storytelling and metaphors. Moments of visual storytelling like the erasing of certain creatures from the marine ecosystem highlighted the stark reality of the voiceover’s words, while metaphors like an underwater safe reflected the ocean’s role in locking away carbon. The representation of scientific processes was an important part of the animation’s message, made understandable and accessible by clear presentation and visual language. Key points were made using data and statistics, icons played a role in making these memorable while also focusing the viewer’s attention on important details. A film with a complex message, we were able to bring the narrative to the screen in way which layered and expanded information - delivering a detailed message and a clear call to action.
About the client
CEA Consulting have worked with clients such as the World Wildlife Fund, Nestlé and Bloomberg Philanthropies. They work in in several sectors, including Environmental Policy and Advocacy; developing long-term solutions in areas such as clean energy, transportation and climate change policy.
