The Rise Free Trust defend and share the ideas of reason, science and freedom. To help ensure these values are celebrated and travel forward with humanity into the future, we created an emotive secular prayer based on a text created by The Rise Free Trust to encapsulate these important ideas.
The challenge
When bringing The Call to Rise Free to the screen, there were several crucial elements of the brief we had to consider. The animation had to communicate The Rise Free Trust’s message while also conveying a sense of atmosphere and reverence to the viewer. It was also essential that there was no onscreen text or real-world representations. This project had to harness the full power of colour, visual language and visual storytelling. We had to make this visual storytelling transcend cultures, communicating something universal to all people.
The film
After putting forward two approaches, The Rise Free Trust chose a combination of both. The result was an animation which combined the poetic and reverent with the thoughtful and inquisitive. This approach was paired with the native illustration style of our illustrator, which was ideal at delivering the universal yet abstract approach needed to bring this project to life. Analogue planning allowed us to fully capture the essence, tone and atmosphere of The Call to Rise Free and this planning translated into a visual language of rich colour and metaphors. As a vital storytelling device, the communicative power of colour can be seen in the transformation of dark colours alluding to ignorance into lighter shades that reflect reason and clarity. The abstracted illustration and metaphor can be seen in moments such as an eye shrouded in dark clouds and silhouettes of people within candle flames. Together, this suite of storytelling devices allowed us to capture the power, reverence and richness of The Call To Rise Free in a way that didn’t need supporting text and was universally human.
