Scribing and Graphic Recording

A highly visual capture of your live event

What is Scribing and how does it work?

Scribing is a creative performance that captures content from meetings and gatherings like talks, conferences, events and plenary sessions. The activity of Scribing summarises what is being said alongside the flavour of the event, capturing pictures and words on large format boards or paper with high-quality coloured markers.

How does Scribing benefit your event?

Scribes are skilled visual thinkers that absorb information and synthesise it into meaningful visuals. Scribing helps to facilitate group understanding and fresh perspectives on the content; a creative injection that will make your event highly memorable!

Post pandemic, people are harnessing the benefits that technology can bring, letting them work anywhere at any time. However, it’s also clear that people love being back together. Being in the same space and collaborating in person is unbeatable.

The sheer quantity of information these days is overwhelming. We’ve all experienced ‘death by PowerPoint’ and Zoom fatigue at some point. The way pervasive technologies are constructed has a big impact on how we consume information. They’re often linear, obscuring connections. Slide by slide, scene by scene - we don’t think like this. We can hold more than one concept in our heads and think about things in parallel.

Scribing solves this, placing ideas together in one eye-span. Simply by standing back, we can see the big picture and the fine details. Concepts can be linked, no matter how disparate.

Not only does Scribing improve an event as it unfolds, you are left with a visual record. We give you the physical illustrations and can provide digitised versions. If arranged, we can even turn parts of the Scribing into content for social media or other comms.

We can also combine our visual capture with a written summary of your event, creating a capture document similar to the example in this video. This makes your event, its ideas and its outcomes even more shareable and impactful.

How does Scribing work?

Scribes are expert storytellers with a huge visual vocabulary. They weave facts and figures into impactful narratives driven by metaphor, characters, emotions and dialogues. We’re hardwired for storytelling, most of us don’t easily retain facts for very long. Scribing makes any content into a story, sharing information and group experiences through relatable and memorable visual storytelling.

Scribing has been with us almost as long as we’ve been thinking. It’s easy to jump back in time 30,000 years to the cave paintings of Southern France or to the Egyptian clerical workers deftly writing over a papyrus. It’s from these Scribes that we take our name, and though today we use markers, boards and paper, our purpose is the same.

[I’m] particularly enjoying the discussion being drawn out live by Cognitive as we look back over the last year and forward to the next - lots of energy and ideas!
— Joy Ashton, Royal Academy of Engineering

We had the pleasure of Scribing a vision planning session for Canterbury Christ Church University. In this video, Professor Alison Honour, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, told us about the event and what Scribing brought to it.

They had Cognitive there who drew a picture of my talk...this is what they took away: so fascinating. I love the mind/brain denying the environment tree.
— Dr. Joanna Boehnert
